Miraa/Khat Bill in Kenya-Hon. Mithika Linturi

The MP elect for Igembe South constituency is proposing to table a bill in Kenyan parliament seeking to make miraa/khat have a recognition and legalisation in the country.

The bill will ensure that the crop is given governement support and investments into the research on this crop. Most of other crops such as the horticulture are receiving lots of government support through research. Government is investing heavily in KARI to conduct research on horticulture and flowers. However, research on miraa has been ignored, the crop is not scheduled either as a cash crop or horticulture.

Through the bill the government is also expected to make gains through the taxation. In town like Maua the main market for Miraa over Kshs. 10 M exchange hands in one day.

proposal by Hon. Mithika is highly welcome and it is anticipated that such a bill will bring greater prosperity to the miraa growers, traders and all other stake holders including the government.
